Downloading & Installing Greek Fonts

Introduction
In order to view the Greek text correctly in Greek characters on the computer screen, the Greek fonts must be installed on the computer that you are using.  If you are seeing the Greek text displayed in English characters rather than in Greek, then you have not properly installed the fonts.

Simply downloading the fonts does not install them on your computer.
For the PC there is a three step process: 1) downloading, then 2)expanding, and finally, 3)  installing the fonts in Windows on your computer. For the MAC, see the note below.

Step 1) Downloading
Download the file "gfonts.exe", making sure to note where on your computer (that is, in what directory, usually on your C: drive) the file is being saved.  Download gfonts.exe now.  463792 Bytes

When you click on the link above, a window will appear to "Save As" (Netscape) or in Internet Explorer select the option to "Save File to Location." Save the file to a folder on your hard drive which you can easily locate.

Step 2) Expanding the font file
Once the "gfonts.exe" file is saved, using MS Windows Explorer, go to the directory where you saved the gfonts.exe file and double click on the file. This will unpack/expand the fonts in this compressed file to individual font files that will have the extension *.ttf.

Step 3) Installing these expanded *.ttf (font) files on your computer
Once expanded, you will then have to use the Windows "Fonts" installer to install the fonts in MS Windows the same way as you would install any other .ttf (TrueType) fonts. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel - and then double click on the Fonts icon. Once the fonts program opens, follow instructions for installing the fonts into Windows. (Again, you will need to know where these new *.ttf fonts were stored in order to install them with the "Fonts" program.)  Installation of the file will result in several fonts being placed on your hard drive in the folder c:\windows\temp\gfonts unless you specified another location during the Unzip process.

As long as the fonts are installed in Windows they will be available for any program that is running in Windows including your Internet browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and MS Word (or other word processor).

Note: If you are having trouble downloading the font file you need, you may need to right click on download link and choose "Save Link As". It is essential you use Netscape 4 (or better) or Internet Explorer 4 (or better).

Also, when you click on the link above, a window will appear to "Save As" (Netscape) or in Internet Explorer select the option to "Save File to Location." Save the file to a folder on your hard drive and follow the instructions above.
